Are You Losing The Internet Speed Race?

By: Baysil Steinberg

Has your internet slowed down drastically since the first time you plugged in that cable modem and went whizzing off into the world wide web? A quick internet speed test will tell you if its the connection itself that has slowed down or if its your computer. There are thousands of speed tests out there and they are all free to use, so why not use them?

The best way to check those speeds is with an online speed test. Most cable companies have one located on their site, plus many other places are hosting these speed tests for their customer base. A simple search on Google will bring up several sites that you can go to and run a speed test.

I like the one at the PCnineoneone site. It has a cool race car interface too, which makes running the test fun. In just a few seconds you will know if your internet is performing the way it is supposed to be. The test will check both download and upload speeds for you.

If your internet speeds are not what they are supposed to be, this could indicate a problem somewhere along the line. A problem could be from the source itself or from your computer. Performing routine speed tests will help you stay on top of your internet's performance.

If you know there is a problem, then at least you can work to figure out what is wrong. Your internet provider should be more than happy to provide tech support for you to troubleshoot and determine the cause of the slow speed.

There are many things you can do yourself to improve your speeds. The first thing I would start with would be unplugging your modem for 30 seconds and plugging it back in. Nine times out of ten rebooting the modem will alleviate the slow speed. The second thing would be to check for and remove any spyware you may have lurking around. AdAware is a great tool for this.
