By: Robert Thomson

Whether you have a new boat or it is your first chance to get back on the water after a long winter, it is important that you take the time to looks over your boat parts before starting out on the water. Before setting sail it is important to check over boat parts, whether a beginning boater or seasoned pro it is your responsibility to check your boat parts.

Boating can be more dangerous than driving a car, no matter how long you plan to be on the lake. In order to avoid some of the more common problems it is important that you check your boat parts before starting the engine. Performing a safety check first is the main difference between having a good day on the lake or a bad night stuck on the lake waiting for help. So consider the following five steps when performing your safety check.

First you should check your engines. Make sure the motor is operating exactly has it was manufactured to do. Basically you should turn on the motor and listen for any signs of irregularities. If you have owned your boat for awhile you will know what a proper running engine sounds like.

Next you want to check your navigational equipment. Before you leave the dock it is vital to check out these boat parts. Navigational equipment should be in proper working order if you want to have a smooth journey, whether you are using just a compass or a sophisticated GPS system.

Now you want to check the communications devices. If you are going to be heading into any open water, even on a large lake, you want to have a communication system on board your boat. Make sure your system is working properly before you head out on the water. If you get into trouble, a communication system can be your best solution and only way to call for help.

The fourth thing to check is the lights, even if you plan on being back before dark you should always check the lights. Sometimes you may be having a lot of fun or something may go wrong and you end up on the water at night. Therefore, it doesn’t hurt to make sure you check the lights before leaving the shore. This means you need to check every light to make sure they are running properly.

Finally you need to check your safety equipment. Before any trip you need to make sure you have all your safety equipment and that they are in proper working order. This means checking everything from the boat seats to the life vests. Just because you probably won’t use your safety equipment is no reason not to consider them as a part of your safety check before leaving for the open water.

Performing a safety check is the best way to be prepared for anything that happens when you are out on the open water. While boating is a fun experience, also remember that is comes with responsibilities as well. In order to have a fun and memorable trip on the water you need to have a safe one and you can ensure this by doing a proper safety check before leaving.
