Forces on the Net

By: Dexter Bedd

Writing a research paper is becoming more and more difficult with the growing community of internet users. Strange isn't it? Usually it should be the other way around but however because of the few users with malicious intent, they make it harder for the rest of us to be able to use the data on the internet as a reliable source of information. These people try to put up all kinds of lies from complete outrageous inane lies to lies that are so well thought out, so intricately believable that it makes it difficult for people to be able to tell the difference if it is real or not.

Because of these people who try to ruin the information that you get from the internet, people have been discrediting the information you find on the vast World Wide Web. Some newspaper editors will not accept articles written entirely based on information extracted from the internet. This effect has trickled down to many university professors that will now require their students to cross reference the information that they may have found from the web with other forms of media such as print, audio or video.

However as Newton's Third Law says that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. There are users out there who try to prevent those with malicious intent who try to spread their lies of misinformation to the rest of users. They try to counter the actions of those who try to ruin it for the rest of us. They actively work rigorously to make sure that the data available to the world can be a reliable source of information that every can use and trust.

This is what happens at Wikipedia, one of the biggest databases of a wide variety of information based on the internet that grows everyday. Wikipedia is based on a system in which just about anyone can modify the information on it. However because of this system it is very vulnerable to all kinds of abuse such as users who try to maliciously destroy the database, users who think it is amusing by pulling pranks such as adding ridiculously information onto someone else's biography by either random or to a targeted individual.

But as mentioned previously, there are counter measures that the creators and system administrators have implemented so they can quickly respond to such petty attacks to their databases as well as community based users who assist in helping Wikipedia keep their integrity as a reliable source of information for all users. One such counter measure is the Recent Changes Patrol who monitors any recent changes to the data present in Wikipedia by its users. By using their experience and knowledge they administer their authority by either approving or rejecting the new content that has been inputted or removed from the database.

Though there are people out there who try to discredit the information extracted from the internet, there are those out there who try to make it as or even more so reliable as the other sources of media.
