The Effects of Acidophilus in the Digestive System

By: Hector Milla

Scientists have discovered there are over 400 different types of bacteria that are present in the human body at all times. Many of these can be found in the digestive tract since this is where food is stored and burned once this is consumed by the person.

One of the primary functions of the digestive tract is to make sure there is a balance between healthy and potentially harmful microorganisms.

Those that are healthy are called microflora. Since a number of these declines due to the person's lifestyle and age, the only way to make sure there is still a balance is with the use of probiotics.

Probiotics is a supplement form of micro-organisms. There are two types namely lactobacillus acidophilus and bifido bacteria.

The better known is lactobacillus acidophilus which is a drug designed to maintain intestinal health by preventing yeast infections in the vagina and mouth, urinary tract infection and be used as an antibiotic for induced diarrhea.

This is often prescribed to patients that are undergoing antibiotic therapy because it is able to kill harmful bacteria allowing the body to have a functioning digestive tract.

But people don't have to get a prescription drug to reap the benefits. The person may purchase yogurt, cheese and fermented foods in the grocery store since these products have one or both as part of its major ingredients.

So what are the benefits of acidophilus? The daily intake of such items has proven to improve digestion and increase the dietary minerals found in other products. This can also alleviate problems such as constipation, reduce blood cholesterol levels and provide protection from the emergence of tumors.

Studies have shown that vegetarians are able to have a better chance of maintaining balance in the digestive system than non-vegetarians because products found in meat, poultry and fish contain a lot of undesirable bacteria such as Bacteroides.

Acidophilus can also be used to treat other diseases. These are namely ACNE, AIDS, cancers, constipation, Crohn's disease, fever, heart burn and ulcers.

It is advisable for the person to consult with the doctor before taking this as medication or as part of one's diet. This is because it can let the person experience some allergic reaction, which may include closing of the throat, difficulty in breathing or swelling in the face, lips or tongue.

Women who are pregnant should also not use it because this may have harmful effects to the baby.

The only effect many will experience for those who are allowed to use it is gassiness which will be felt for a few days. Doctors see this as usual effect anyone will experience because the intestines are adjusting to the bacterial shift.

The intake of acidophilus may help breakdown the complex food molecules and prevent the growth of those that are harmful. People who want to get more of this aside from food that can be purchased in the grocery can try getting some in tablets of ascorbic acid, which contains vitamin C.

Acidophilus is one way of keeping the body's digestive system healthy. After all, it is the choice of the person what kind of food comes in so it is also the responsibility of that individual to make sure that bad bacteria balances itself out.
