Wrinkle Cream Reviews - A Historic Perspective

By: Geoff Hopkins

Shortly after wrinkle creams first came on the market, informative reviews were written about them, for the benefit of potential buyers. Over time the reviews became more and more biased by selling tactics of the vendors.

The first reviews of wrinkle creams were written by scientists. The content of the reviews was factual and addressed important factors such as the constituent properties of the creams, their manufacture, their effectiveness in treating aging skin and possible side-effects that were all too common in early creams.

Typically, such reviewers had a full scientific education to post-graduate level, and had worked in similar fields for several years previously. At that time there was much competition for jobs in scientific research fields, so obtaining the appropriately qualified staff was not a problem.

The authors hoped to uncover the best anti aging wrinkle cream available and were exacting in their test methods to achieve this aim. They would carry out tests on various forms of skin - dead skin, dismembered skin, animal skin - predominantly mouse and weasel, but sometimes also cat - and of course live human skin, still attached to bodies.

Not only did the reviewers test the creams on many types of skin, they also tested them on skin of different ages. This allowed the creams to be judged on a per-wrinkle basis. Hence, they were able to say whether a cream was better for elderly cat skin, for example, or young dismembered skin. This research was very valuable.

Because the reviews were based purely on scientific studies of the creams and not speculation, the authors spent much more time working in the lab than writing their reviews. After vigorous testing of all the creams, the best cream was identified, and then the writing process began.

In order to produce elegant and non-misleading content in their reviews, the texts were written by teams of reviewers: typically one person would write the first draft, a second would amend it, a third proof-read it and a fourth approve it for publication. In the final text, no effort was made to spare readers from complex scientific detail, as this was believed to be beneficial to potential wrinkle cream customers.

I contend that modern reviews of wrinkle creams suffer from influence by those involved with the product, and the aim of many reviews is simply to market the cream. It also seems that creams are no longer subjected to vigorous scientific testing, this is a shame.
